Technical Presentation of the AMS Proxy
To allow the localisation of an existing application running natively on a client machine, AMS relies on a server-side component called the AMS Proxy.

AMS Proxy is a Web Reverse Proxy Server, i.e. it accepts requests from clients and forwards them to the origin server on behalf of the clients. When the origin server sends the response back, the content of the Web page is analysed and a new page is built using the corresponding translations found in the AMS Thesaurus. The new localised page is then sent back to the client and displayed by the Web browser. The end-user sees a localised Web page although it is still the original unmodified application that is running on the Web server.
Here are the basic steps that occur when the AMS Proxy process a page:
- The client requests a page
- The request is passed on the Web server
- The Web server sends back the original requested page
- The AMS Proxy replaces the texts found in the page by the translations found in the AMS Thesaurus and sends back the new localised page to the client
- The browser displays the localised page
HTML, JavaScript, XML and AJAX are supported by default by the AMS Proxy. Additional components are available to localise other formats such as PDF files, Excel spreadsheets and reports developed with Crystal Reports or Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services.
The AMS Proxy is designed for performance and can support hundreds or thousands of simultaneous connections.
The AMS Proxy is available for all versions of Windows Server starting with Windows 2000, Linux RHEL 4 or 5 and Sun Solaris 8 or 10. For other versions of Linux or UNIX, please contact us.
The AMS Thesaurus
The texts used to display the translations are stored in the AMS Thesaurus which is a high-performance, easy to administer multilingual database system. The AMS Thesaurus is optimised for fast retrieval of large quantity of multilingual texts. Once the project is complete, it is basically a file that can be copied or uploaded for use by the AMS Proxy. On top of translations, the AMS Thesaurus also stores configuration data. AMS Studio is used to create and manage the content of the thesaurus.
